In case your grade school science has slipped out of your brain (to be replaced with 1,786 personal identification numbers) here is a refresher.

The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to vary in a predictable way.

The steps are as follows:

# Ask a Question
# Do Background Research
# Construct a Hypothesis
# Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment
# Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion
# Communicate Your Results

It’s simple. Even a 1.5 year old can do science.

Question: What is this new creature in our house?
Background research: Look inquisitively at mom and dad.
Hypothesis: Could be a new puppy, or perhaps a toy.
Experiment: Poke at it.

Anders touches Finn's nose

It has a nose.
Anders looks at Finn's feet

It has toes.
Anders plays with Finn's mobile.

It has sheep.

Conclusion: Seems almost human.

Ah ha! It’s a baby!

Communicate results:
Run and hug new baby every time you enter the room.
