John Steinbeck said, “I am in love with Montana. For other states, I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection, but with Montana it is love, and it’s difficult to analyze love when you’re in it.”
We couldn’t agree more. Montana is home and travel for us. We love nesting in our chosen town at the Original Gateway to Yellowstone National Park. And we love traversing the state–climbing mountains, floating rivers, wandering through small towns and large ones (by Montana standards), and getting to know the people that, combined with an astounding landscape, make this state great.
Montana is bigger than many of the countries we visit, so there is a lot to see here.

WINTER DOESN’T MEAN THAT ROAD TRIP SEASON IS OVER; it just means you have to take a little extra time on the road. And isn’t that the point? Last February, I ventured into Western Montana to cross-country ski and soak in hot springs with my husband, Henry, and our two boys, Anders, 8, and Finn, 6. …

One of the things I thought about a lot while hiking in Europe was how wild the United States is in pockets. I loved rambling through the alps and along the U.K. coast, but it wasn’t the same as walking in wilderness. Upon our return to the U.S. I was asked to write a piece …
A few years ago I was interviewed for an article in NationalGeographic.com about the five must-do local activities for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Montana in spring. Living in Montana, I never liked spring. While the rest of the northern hemisphere is dancing in daffodils and turning in tulips, Montanans are wading through sleety, sludgy, cold, gray …
In the opening to “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Snoopy skates onto a pond and grabs the hand of a child and skates with a bunch of them in single file. He slides on the ice on his belly. The children skate in a carefree, winter wonderland, except for Charlie Brown, of course, who ends up …

In the early 1960s two schoolteachers from California vacationed in West Yellowstone. Like many people who explore the conifer-filled mountains, beautiful Hebgen Lake, and stunning Yellowstone National Park, the Thompsons wanted to stay. In 1964, they bought property where the Running Bear Pancake House now sits, and built a house. During their summer vacations, the …

There used to be a website called New West, which I would occasionally write for. It closed up shop several years ago, but recently this essay –Back on the Horse: What It Means to be a Westerner–popped up somehow. I kind of like it, so I am posting it here. Back on the Horse: What …

We are wrapping up an incredible ten days. We’ve been in three time zones, six airplanes, a subway, a taxi, a rental car, and my sister-in-law’s SUV. We’ve spent the night in a casino on the California/Nevada border, my brother’s townhouse a mile from the ocean, a gorgeous row house on Capitol Hill, and my …
